Welcome to Tuscany! All of the tours below are conceived as day trips by sedan or minivan from Florence.

Not staying in Florence? Let Lauren know when you write and she’ll have suggestions for where else you can visit depending on your location.

Visiting Tuscany is not one size fits all so we’ll work together to make the best itinerary for you depending on where you are staying and what your interests are.

This page is about tours in inland Tuscany. For our page on Pisa and Tuscan Coast Tours, click here.

The incredible history of Florence isn’t only confined to her artists and architecture but extends to the development and preservation of culinary excellence in the Tuscany region. Immerse yourself in the best of Tuscan wine and food on this full day experience in the world famous region of Chianti just south of Florence. We’ll take care of all the bookings so all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the ride (and the tastes!).

Start off with a visit to a working dairy farm in Chianti to see how they make their award winning cheese and meet their sheep! Then stop in Badia a Passignano, a medieval village and abbey to see a fresco of The Last Supper by Ghirlandaio (first teacher of Michelangelo) and then feast at the famous rockstar butcher of Panzano (unless of course you are vegetarian in which case we have other options – just let us know). Relax in the afternoon at a beautiful winery to try a selection of Chianti Classico wines with a view over the rolling Tuscan hills before your driver brings you back into Florence in time for dinner.

Full Day Chianti: Meet the Winemakers

Tour details

  • Suggested start time: 8:00am
  • Duration: 8-9 hours
  • Cost: €550 for driver/sommelier

Customisation options

This is a great tour to combine with a “stay on the way” tour experience. Instead of going directly from Rome to Florence you could stay at a lovely Agriturismo for a night or two on your way between one city and the next.

Tour description

If you’re interested in getting to know more about Tuscany’s famous wine, this is the tour for you. We’ll be going to off the beaten track wineries where you’ll meet the winemakers themselves and get a personalised experience that focuses on what goes into making Chianti Classico different and special at each location. At the first winery, we’ll discuss how altitude, aging, soil composition and biological wine making practices all affect the grape at a winery that doesn’t even release it’s wines until its been five years in the barrel.

After lunch, you’ll head to a really special and off the beaten track location to taste wine straight from the barrel that you’ll then compare to wine that has been bottled and aged. You’ll try Sangiovese in the form of Chianti Classico but also in the form of a stripped down white / rose version, essentially made with just the whites of the grape that have been in contact with the skin for only a few hours.

You’ll spend a bit more time in the car on this tour but it’s worth it!

Visit Siena for a half day in the morning and stop at a winery for lunch and wine tasting on your way back to Florence or stay in Siena for the day, taking in the city with a guide in the morning and having free time to explore in the afternoon.

The Cathedral and baptistry are some of the most stunning in Italy where you can see work by Michelangelo and Donatello and numerous medieval and Renaissance masters.

visit the Piazza del Campo where the famous Palio of Siena horse race takes place. You can climb the belltower for an incredible view over the city and/or visit the Palazzo Publico, a medieval political palace full of incredible frescoes including the fresco of “The Allegory of Good and Bad Government” by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.

The Museum of Santa Maria dell Scala is one of Europe’s first hospitals and Siena was the location of Europe’s oldest banks. You could easily spend a few days in Siena, but if you only have a short amount of time, a private guide will help you make the most of your time and discover the best of Siena.

Tour description

The Val d’Orcia area south of Siena is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Tuscany. In fact, the entire area has been named a UNESCO world heritage site. The region is characterised by harmony and perfection from its slow produced foods, its world famous wines and its balanced and elegant Renaissance buildings. If you’re headed to Montepulciano or Montalcino, don’t miss some of the amazing places in between.

Things to visit in this area: Montepulciano, Montalcino, the Church of San Biagio, wineries producing Brunello or Nobile di Montepulciano, cheese making on an organic farm, Pienza (where they filmed The Medici), Bagno Vignoni spa town, and more.

To organize a day trip in this area, write to Lauren telling her what you’re interested in seeing and we can put something together based on where you are staying and what interests you!

Tuscany between Rome & Florence

Instead of taking the train between Rome and Florence, hire a private driver instead so you can stop at interesting places along the way and turn your travel day into an exploration day. Or better yet, stay somewhere beautiful in Chianti for a few days. We could arrange a driver to pick you up in Rome for example and drop you off at the perfect Bnb in the middle of the Tuscan countryside. When you’re ready to go to Florence, we’ll send a driver from Florence to pick you up. Comfortable driving in Italy? You can do the same thing with a rental car and have the freedom to explore the whole area of Tuscany. Don’t miss this special part of Italy because the logistics seem too complicated, I’ll walk you through it!

Talk to Lauren about what you’d like to see when you book so you can arrange the perfect excursion.
